Biological desulfurization (BDS) is a process in which a sulfur-containing compound (H2S, organic sulfur) is catalyzed by microorganisms or enzymes contained therein to convert it into elemental sulfur (S) and a trace amount of SO4²¯. With this biological desulfurization process, the efficiency can be higher than 99.5%.

Technically it belongs to separate biological desulfurization process, as it does not introduce exogenous gases such as air, oxygen into reaction, and the calorific value of biogas remains unchanged. It can be used for removal of H2S in biogas, natural gas and industrial waste gas generated by anaerobic digestion of domestic garbage, livestock manure, kitchen waste and organic sewage. The desulfurization product is a high-purity elemental sulfur (S), which can be used for industrial production.

Principles for Biological Desulfurization: 
In the absorption tower, H2S containing gas is countercurrently contacted with the alkali solution which contains the sulfur bacteria. During this phase, H2S is dissolved in the alkaline solution , then enters into the bioreactor with lye, while purified gas gets out from the top. In the pneumatic bioreactor environment, sulfide (HS -) is oxidized to elemental sulfur by sulfur bacterium bacteria. Then the sulphur is withdrawn from the bioreactor in the form of a slurry which can be further dried into a powder or melted to form commercial sulphur. At the same time, the lye is regenerated during the production of elemental sulfur and then it's returned to the absorption tower for recycling.
The oxidation process to reduce sulfur ( H2S ) is carried out in a bioreactor, which ensures the biogas is not exposed to oxygen, so it's safer and more reliable. Moreover, the biogas is not mixed with impurity gas and does not reduce the calorific value of it.

Absorption phase:
H2S absorption: H2S+OH-=HS-+H2O
H2S+CO32-=HS-+HCO3-
CO2 absorption: CO2+OH-=HCO3-
Carbonate formation: HCO3-+OH-=CO32-+H2O
Biological phase:
Sulfur formation: HS-+1/2 O2=S+OH-
Sulfate formation: HS-+2O2=SO42-+H+
Carbonate decomposition: CO32-+H2O=HCO3-+OH-
Bicarbonate decomposition: HCO3-=CO2+OH
